corpus christi...

...is a national holiday. Legitimately, in every country I've ever been in during the month of May, they throw in some random day that nothing happens on. It's like almost summer, people want a day off, so the entire world agreed that during May it was just appropriate. This May, I've lucked out because not only did I not have school today, but I also do not have school next Thursday or Friday.

Yesterday was pretty uneventful, I found the bookstore (of course closed) and went to class. I thought four hours straight of class would get rougher, but yesterday it was okay. The second class I love my teacher. First class I think that I sleep with my eyes open, but that's okay. The hours of their stores is approximately 9-1 and then sometimes they reopen around 4 but if their siesta ran over I literally feel like people just stay home and don't go back to work. Places sometimes have hours on their door... they mean nothing. I'm not quite sure why they're confused about their economy being in the toilet, but something tells me that the economy has a relationship with hours slept per week and beers consumed per week.

Beer here.... is like water. You have to pay to get water in a restaurant. You have to pay for beer in a restaurant. Guess which is cheaper.... not good ole h2o. Beer is the cheapest thing you can buy here, and they drink it from 9am until whenever they want to sleep. With lunch, it's nothing for working professionals to sit down and have three beers and go back to work. And again, they wonder why they're economy isn't blossoming like a flower in springtime.

Today I did a really rude thing to my friends unintentionally (yes I made friends!) We were supposed to catch a megabus type bus to take us to the beach about 45 minutes away... it didn't happen. MY FAULT. My phone with my Spanish number is old school. I'm talking the original Nokia that I always bugged mom/ dad to play snake on. The sound quality... yikes.... I didn't hear the alarm so rather than being at the bus station at 9:30 I woke up at 9:37 and I had just bought two other girls' tickets while I was there so they didn't make it either. Luckily they were very nice about it, and it ended up being my favorite day here thus far. We got some bottled sangria and sat by the river and  got our tan on. For lunch, I spent two euros for a sandwich and a beer. I will be frequenting that place because that price is unheard of ! We spent a long time in the sun today, and I most certainly have tan lines/ possibly a slightly burned face.

Tomorrow I have to go try the book store  again and actually do some homework. I'm disappointed that these classes aren't going to be a piece of cake and that I'll actually have to do work. There are too many thing in this continent for me to see and do while I'm here that studying just seems so silly. Thus far, I've learned more Spanish/ about culture/ about life at Spanish bars/ restaurants than in classrooms here. Maybe that will change, but something in me doubts it. I feel my Spanish improving though, which is great!!
